Jawai moves to Timberwolves in NBA
16:58 AEST Wed Oct 21 2009

As one Australian basketball big man found yet another NBA home, another was finding his feet back on court as the new season looms next week.

Andrew Bogut showed encouraging form on Wednesday as he continues his return from a stress fracture in his back, producing 14 points, 10 rebounds and two blocks in a pre-season high 28 minutes against Charlotte.

The re-tooled Bucks lost 94-87 but have shown some reasonable signs in the pre-season, earning victories over Houston, Chicago and Minnesota.

The latter is now the new home of young Australian centre Nathan Jawai, who has been traded to the Timberwolves from Dallas.

Jawai, 23, has failed to find a permanent home so far in his young NBA career ever since he was drafted by Indiana last year and immediately shipped to Toronto.

His 2008-09 rookie season was ruined by a heart complaint, playing just six games with Toronto before being traded to Dallas in the off-season.

But he has played just one pre-season game with the Mavericks before finding himself on the move again, this time to Minnesota one week prior to the start of the new season.

It has been a fairly tumultuous time for the first indigenous Aussie to make the NBA, but he is remaining confident and should get more opportunities with the young T-Wolves than he would have in Dallas.

Minnesota already have some history with Australians, previously signing both Luc Longley and Shane Heal.

The Mavericks received a conditional second round draft pick and cash as part of the deal.

"I'm used to the cold weather after playing in Toronto," Jawai said of the notoriously frigid Minnesota weather.

"I'm finishing up a couple of games with Dallas and then heading to Minnesota at the end of the week.

"I'm looking forward to getting on court as the T-Wolves don't have many big men and I'm excited about being in Minnesota."

Australia will have four players in the world's best league this coming season - Bogut, Jawai, Houston forward David Andersen and Portland point guard Patty Mills.

It is a healthy situation for new Boomers coach Brett Brown, as all four will form a key part of the Australian side at next year's world championships in Turkey.

Bogut has an important year coming up after his back injury forced him to miss the entire second half of last season.

Always outspoken about himself and his team, the former No.1 draft pick wasn't thrilled with Milwaukee's efforts against Charlotte so close to the new season.

"We came out flat, with no energy," he told the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel.

"That was the worst first half of basketball we have played for this pre-season so far, including practices, scrimmage.

"The second half was much better, but there's no excuse for the way we played in the first half. That's accountability-wise, everyone including myself. We just didn't do a good job."

The Bucks finish up their pre-season against Detroit on Saturday before opening the season proper in Philadelphia on October 30.
