Expect more of the same from the selectors

Have your say on Australia's selectors.

Recent news that Australia's cricket selection team of Andrew Hilditch, David Boon, Merv Hughes and Jamie Cox would be performing their roles for another two years must have been music to the ears of opposition sides around the world.

This quartet of former players of varying prowess have been universally criticised for their work over the past year. When Australia loses the Ashes, someone has to be held responsible. Too many Australians feel too much pain when the little urn ends up in the hands of the Poms.

There are far too many of us who work with or know someone who once called England home. Someone whose only remaining connection to the motherland is their ridiculous accent and the pride they feel whenever they win any form of sporting event. When England beats Australia in anything they happily drive the knife in and twist.

Do the selectors feel that pain? Do they realise how deflating it is to see Australia lose the Ashes? Do they know the countless alternative sides that we home selectors could have come up with that would have been better than theirs?

After reading Andrew Hilditch's responses in an interview after his re-appointment, I doubt very much that he does feel the same pain that we supporters endure.

When it was suggested that a pumped up and red-hot Brett Lee might force his way into the Test side for the upcoming summer, Hilditch responded with;

"The reality is at the start of the summer we will be in a similar position - Johnson, Siddle and Hilfenhaus did a very good job for us in England. I've got every expectation they would be right in the mix for the First Test."

Andrew, Andrew, Andrew… we LOST the Ashes in England. Those same three bowlers couldn't take ten England wickets in the second innings of the First Test in Cardiff and it was all downhill from there.

Apart from the Fourth Test in Leeds, which Australia won comfortably, this bowling attack couldn't dismiss England for less than 330 runs in seven separate innings over four Tests. Yet Andrew Hilditch, the chairman of selectors, says they did a good job and will more than likely be first picked for the upcoming summer.

I'm not saying Brett Lee is the answer, I'm not even saying Johnson, Siddle and Hilfenhaus aren't our best pace line-up, but they weren't good enough in England and someone has to stand up and say so.

The chairman of selectors needs to know that losing the Ashes is unacceptable and he and his team need to do everything in their power to make sure it never happens again.

If Australia goes with the same line-up in the Tests against Pakistan and West Indies, their performances against the weaker opposition will no doubt gloss over the reality of the Ashes tour. Before we know it England will be here to defend the Ashes and we'll be serving up more of the same.

The selection panel is way too bullet-proof. I suggest that following the loss of any major series or tournament, the panel be scrapped completely and the Australian captaincy thrown open. A new panel should be hired and they should pick their side and name their captain.

Someone has to be held responsible for all the pain we supporters have to endure.

how can hilditch still be a selector after the decisions he has made. Ever since the 2006 Ashes series where austrtalia had gilchrist, warne, mcgrath, langer he has made stupid selections. He says he made the right moves in the 2009 Ashes series were we lost because we couldn't take 10 wickets and we didn't have a spinner. In the current bowling line up of johnson, siddle, hilfy and hauritz only johnson and hauritz should keep their spots. Lee and clark should come back. And johnson is not a spearhead bowler. I have seen him bowl good for only 4 matches and everyone thinks he is a gun. He doesn't swing the ball inwards and gets batsmen out with a wide ball. if they continue with this bowling line up then they will not be one of the best countries in the world.
And in regards to the selectors. Steve Waugh is too busy with his charitable foundations that he will never do it ... he turned down a lucrative IPL coaching roll this year for the same reason. Gilchrist, Hayden, Warne ,etc should not get to select a team that a few years ago they were playing in. It is a massive conflict to have guys selecting and sacking people they played with and know personally. Most of the great cricketing minds of the previous era's are commentating at the moment or have captained or coached the Aus team before and have since moved on. So I would ask again someone please tell me who is better then the current team. Boon is one of the best and particularly toughest players we have produced outside of the current era. Hilditch was a accomplished state player, cricket administrator and a partner in a law firm. Jamie cox was a solid state cricketer and is a exceptional administrator. Merv is Merv ... he calls it how he sees it, which is what you need in a selector.
Putting aside the Ridiculousness of sacking selectors or captains because of a couple of losses no one has put up viable alternatives. Win or lose the best person for the job should get the job. As a captain you need two things, been assured of holding your spot and having the skills and experience to captain effectively. The only other genuine option for the captain is M Clarke. Huss, Lee, Haddin and even Katich are no certainties to hold their spots in the long run and no other player has the experience required. Clarke will get the captaincy in 3-4 years when he's 31-32 when he's ready and I challenge you to find a better leader then Ponting who has made 2 mistakes in the better part of a decade as captain, not to mention all the trophies he's brought home. Why should sportsman be subject to greater abuse and standards then other professions? No other profession would tolerate constant baselsss abuse, and demotion based on one mistake. Why should sport be any different?
What we need to do is have players that play to win, not treat it like a job. We have plenty of talent, yet we see the same players play their way in and out of form on the international scene. They seem more interested in making commercials than playing cricket. We lost two consecutive Commonwealth Bank cups, complained that we were playing too much cricket - yet our players still found time to play in the IPL.
The selectors should have gone all of them and Steve Waugh and Matty Hayden should be bought in these 2 legends of our game were honoured to wear the baggy green cap of Australia and always cherished it and never took it for granted and wore it with pride. These are the sort of guys who should be selecting our teams to represent our country. Warnie should be the coach of Australia - these 3 legends are crucial to Australian cricket and they need to be involved asap. The current selectors let down the players and the nation Hughes is dropped after 2 games in England a decision no one could understand he is a young player and needed the experience not be dropped not playing Brett Lee and Hauritz in the 5th test was an suicidal blunder by the selectors....and they get reinstated. I've never been able to understand their selections. For the record Hughes and Warner need to open for Australia in all forms of cricket they are the future and could be a formidable opening pair.
Geez Mr S*itstirrer, you really live up to your name, don't you. "...following the loss of any major series or tournament, the panel be scrapped completely and the Australian captaincy thrown open. A new panel should be hired and they should pick their side and name their captain." Are you completely insane? This is the sort of knee-jerk alarmist rubbish that is ruining our entire culture at the moment, not just cricket. I defy anyone here to nominate a selector's panel and another Australian Captain who would do better than the current ones. There are any number or potential selectors about, but would they get better results? And to anyone calling for Ponting's head as captain, for God's sake the guy has the best captaincy record ever, is one of the best batsmen in the world... perhaps your expectations are a little unrealistic? I'd be interested in knowing who you would replace him with. Not many candidates up to the task...
One would expect such a critical job as selector to go to those whose careers would suggest they are capable of such a position.Fair dinkum,Merv Hughes was the team clown.WHATis he doing and WHO gave him the job. SACK THEM BOTH. Test selectors should be former test captains or vice captains FULL STOP. The arrogance shown by CA to support these bufoons shows the contempt in which CA holds the public.Im over it.
Lee and Clark would be my 1st choice of quicks. Lee has been our strike bowler for a long time now and has proven that he should be a mainstay in our attack. Clark's record is outstanding and speaks for its self. The others have been very good at times and especially Johnson who would be the 3rd choice quick but they're often inconsistent and don't have the experience to get sides out twice. The selectors often talk about giving players a go and player loyalty. What about given our spinners a go. Jason Krejza played back in that series in India and demolished the opposition with a brilliant 8 wicket haul. Then they played him in a Perth test which was a batsmens paradise and he got smashed. Now we have Hauritz who is going alright but he, like some of the other bowlers we have are not going to make a big impact on the match. These players never win or loose a game by themselves. We need to give attacking bowlers a chance to show themselves like Warney got. They win games.
Time for Steve Waugh and Matty Hayden to become selectors if their willing. The no backward steps and the honour of playing in the Baggy Green needs an injection of commitment and cricket aggression to get us rolling again. As for the coach, not qualified to comment, other then from observation he would seem overwellemed with whats going on. Do we have a better option available? And Brett should be back in the bowling stocks, as for Ricky, is it time? His record isn't great but its not bad either?
We lost the Ashes well before we left Australia, how can you pick an ashes squad and only allow for 2 openers. I like young Hughes but I think he was let into a false sense of security. He had a great SA tour but he is young and England is a different place to play, they should of had another opener in the squad. How can they leave Stuie Clark out of 1st test when he would've of won it for them and then the final result would've been very different. Hilfi was a huge find for Australia but our batsmen were to inconsistant with exception of Clarke and North. You can blame the selectors and the Coach but at the end of the day, we had an experienced squad who failed badly. All I hear Chappell, Warne and co say is that the Captain runs the team, so maybe Punter needs to take full responsibilty along with Hussey and co. They have been around long enough to wear the criticism but these guys seem to be to precious. CA need to take more responsibity, they employ these people.
Selectors gone sewe you later and we need to pick a team that is going to take wickets and make runs. Our opening patnership should be Katich and Phillip Japues and if we had to replace 1 of them call up phil hughes caz shane watson is not a long term opener in test cricket ponting at 3 huss 4 and pup 5 now no 6 is a problem caz we have so many guys who deserve a place i think the best 3 options would be watson north or white brad haddin 1st choice keeper now bowling i think our best attack would be lee johnson clark and haurtiz caz u need a specialist spinner in every nearly every test caz u cant always really on par timers
jude from sydney, are you joking that there is a bias against players from NSW, have you checked the team sheet recently? players from NSW have been given the best opportunity out of any other state for a long long time. Ever heard of brad hodge? Incase you've forgotten, Ponting was one of the standout performers on the ashes tour, and watson dominated at the top of the batting order in the champions trophy, he has bowled poorly so far this one day series, but match winning performances in finals cannot be forgotten. I agree the selectors made some stinking decisions in the ashes, it was well noted before the 5th test that the pitch would turn from day 1, but really mate actually watch some cricket before you make a comment
I agree, Andrew Hilditch should be replaced as well as one of the Tasmanian selectors - a new approach is needed. Also, I cant believe how the coach, Tim Nielsen keeps flying under the radar! He was an ordinary cricketer, and his results as a coach are definitely very poor. Lacks any form of vision or promise of hope.
I still cant believe that Cricket Australia would continue with the selectors. Hilditch was an average player at best, Cox never played test or OD cricket for Australia, Hughes and Boon are past it. We have dropped down the test rankings and the excuse Hilditch uses is "we are rebuilding". That is fine, it will take a while to replace our stars that have retired but why don't CA start the rebuilding with the incompetant selectors. We need guys like Waugh, Langer, McGrath, Hayden, and co. Ex players that have played the MODERN game, not the game of past years. Until we get selectors that are prepared to be proactive and think outside the square we are in for a lean few summers to come. We have some fantastic young players out there that are not even being considered, all we get are the usual 5 or 6 fringe players that are clearly not good enough.
This guy sounds perfectly well balanced-with a chip on both shoulders.. expecting that 'losing the ashes should never happen again' is a ridiculous expectation in what is a two horse race..The results of the 1990s and early 2000s spoilt Australian supporters.. as to the comment "When Australia loses the Ashes, someone has to be held responsible. Too many Australians feel too much pain when the little urn ends up in the hands of the Poms." Get a grip, England won far and square and what makes Australia great is significantly more than the result of the Ashes...
Australia lost the ashes because it repeatedly got bowled out for 200 in the first dig, not because of its bowlers. People seem to forget that everyone said hauritz was no good at the start of the tour, but cried blue murder when he was left out. They also said hilfenhaus was no good and he was by andy flower's own admission the best bowler on tour. The selectors thought marcus north could handle the job and he took 4-98 ... I reiterate the reason why Australia lost was because it's batsmen failed when it counted. And another thing who the hell are all these no nothing clowns who criticise Ponting. He still has one of the best win ratios ever and has played like 130 tests. Wah he bowled part timers in cardiff ... well if your strike bowler is bowling *** it restricts your options. Everyone forgets that ponting won the last Indian series in Aus when he hands the ball to M clarke who takes 3-5 at the death. Don't be poms and jump on your team at the first sign of trouble back em!
I reckon our side is rebuilding nicely, contrary to many beleifs, Hauritz is bowling really well in both formats. Hilfi and Siddle have shown glimses of greatness, just give them time. Tim Paine and Phil Hughes also look the goods. Watson has improved. We have the foundations of another unbeatable side. With a series win over South Africa in South Africa we don't look far off. Selectors are doing a good job!!
All this talk about lee is desperate dribble, he no longer has the ability to produce constant express pace and is now majorly injury prone, other than a good in swinging yorker i fail to see how he is australias saviour. Untill someone can produce any kind of consistency as a bowler we will have this trouble, that is what made pigeon so great. And can someone please get a message to Shane Watson!!! Constant rank full tosses outside off stump is NOT considered restrictive bowling!
Great article, you hit the nail right on the head. Hilditch and his mates are grossly incompetent. But Brett Lee is not the answer! Replace Siddle (who they some to adore - he only bowls about 5 good overs a test match) with Stuie Clark and we are on our way. And please will someone find a spinner who is better than Hauritz!
Ponting showed what a very average captain he is in the first test at Cardiff which Australia should have won. In the first session he bowled Johnson for 7 or 8 overs straight when he was going for 6 an over and bowling rubbish instead of taking him off and bringing him back on with the older ball. This gave England great momentum. Then in the final session of the game when needing only one English wicket and runs not an issue he did not use Johnson at all when he is renowned for coming up with a wicket with both good and bad balls. Ponting lost that test!
geee listen to you guys arguing over a sport that has no skill or tactic its the most boring sport ever!
Some of you guys make me sick... Lee has never been a good test bowler and never will... his stats speak for themselves
All the selectors and Ponting need to be sacked. The fact that two selectors come from Tasmania is a pretty good indication that things just arent right. We keep losing, the selectors keep getting it wrong and insist the teams they pick are good. Who are they trying to kid? The Australian public know the difference between a winning and a losing team and right now we have losers. Until this bias against NSW players is a thing of the past we will never have a decent team. And will someone please tell me what Shane Watson is doing in the national side it cant be because of his cricketing ability which only leaves blackmail or secret man love.
Why dont the selectors play to win ? I play bush cricket and we have 4 grades. When we pick our sides, the first team is ALWAYS the best team we can put on the park. Why does this not apply to the Australian side????
Should be sacked and booted out the door for their poor selections during the ashes. I can't believe they did not pick a specialist spinner in the last test in England when they knew that the pitch would be doctored to get a result. They should be transferred as selectors ot the English team that way we would know we would win. Hells bells boys wake up. Bloody too late now.
Contrary to 'Bigfish, Darwin',the selectors are not doing a good job at all! I don't know what time zone your in sport, but we just lost the only thing that really matters in Australian cricket, the Ashes. Hilditch absolutely should have gone, it's a freakin boys club, and I'm dirty on the whole set up!
I agree we need to get better selectors hilditch boon hughes and cox gone! and we need to get a team thats formable i mean come on losing to ENGLAND thats a bit embarassing and we need to make better selections i think hughes and katich should be NO 1 opening patnership if 1 is injured or dropped phil jacques straight in there i think watson should be at 6 if north is not playing well and our bowling attack should be lee clark johnson haurtiz if it is a decent track for spin if not than i think siddle should be in or hilfy. and 1 more thing why dont they give Brad hodge another crack he is such a class act
In response to bigfish in dawin if you think picking losing sides a good job then i supose they are. When brett lee is fit he should be in the aussie side he is our best fast bowler with a track record to prove it, the job of the selectors is to make the hard decisions of who to leave out to put him in. Merv Hughes seems to have forgotten about loyalty since retiring and becoming a selector. Loyalty is not only for batsman (eg ***)
Wow, you Brett Lee fans are a hardy bunch. Wish I had the faith in him that you guys do. I don't know that getting wickets in the slogathon that is 20-20 cricket is a genuine portent of test wicket taking form, though. Still as is his wont, he'll probably pad his stats against a feeble West Indies side and proclaim how he is back for good. Then he might knock over a few Kiwi's and Bangladeshi's for good measure. Then, when we are sweating on him to take a bagfull against England, South Africa and India (you know, our main opposition), he'll pull his usual shrinking violet act, get hit everywhere but the roof of the mouth and take an occasional tail enders wicket. Sorry, he's let us down too many times for my liking. Happy to be proven wrong, but I doubt I will be. Oh, and yes, the selectors need to be rotated out for AB, DK Lillee and R Marsh.
The selection panel is unbalanced with 3 batsmen and one fast bowler. Hilditch has demonstrated over time that he has poor judgement, particularly with spinners. He was not a particularly good batsman. I'd like to see him replaced with an intelligent spinner on the panel. The selectors stuffed up in England. Stuart Clark should have been selected for the first test because of his form, fitness and importantly his experience. It was stupidity that they selected a bowling lineup with zero Ashes experience. Johnson had a dreadful Ashes but is by far the most devastating of the incumbent pace trio. Hilfenhaus and Siddle have put in some solid performances in recent times. It'd be hard to leave one or more of those bowlers out but tough decisions need to be made, particularly when the team is not winning matches. Brett Lee when fit and in form is the best pace bowler in Australia - he must play. Hauritz should play most matches and Clark must be seriously considered.
