World team to compete at under-16 level
11:31 AEST Thu Oct 29 2009

The AFL will attempt to broaden its international development by introducing a world under-16 team into the national championships starting next year.

A team comprising international-born players only will compete in division two of the championships against NSW/ACT, Northern Territory, Queensland and Tasmania.

The players will also to take part in a five-day high performance camp.

AFL general manager of development David Matthews said the World XVIII would attempt to work as a means for AFL clubs to help identify international talent.

"The predominant focus of the AFL industry will remain on domestic talent, but a targeted approach to international talent will aim to develop international players for the AFL competition and also to stimulate the development of the game in foreign markets," Matthews said.

Ireland has proved the most consistent source of non-Australian AFL players, including Brownlow Medallist Jim Stynes and ex-Sydney premiership player Tadhg Kennelly.

Several current AFL players, including Collingwood's Harry O'Brien (Brazil) and Port Adelaide's David Rodan (Fiji) were born outside Australia.
