The Bulleen Boomers have surged clear of the WNBL field after a 79-70 win over the Adelaide Lightning capped a triumphant weekend on the road in round five.

A win on Sunday would have drawn Adelaide level on the table with Bulleen, but the Boomers built on their great start to the season by establishing a break during the second quarter and held firm in the last when the Lightning crept to within five points.

Forward Jenna O'Hea had a great all-round game by leading Bulleen in points (17), rebounds (12), assists (seven) and steals (three) and Rachel Jarry scored 15 points, while Cayla Francis (19 points and 10 rebounds) was the Lightning's best.

Bulleen's win, which followed a 103-69 demolition of the Perth Lynx in the west on Friday night, was their seventh in succession and gave them a handy lead over their rivals, with the bonus of playing their next five games at home.

Townsville (4-0) are the only other unbeaten side, while Adelaide's defeat dropped them to fourth spot with a 5-2 record.

Adelaide did enjoy some success on the weekend, as they beat the Dandenong Rangers 75-66 in Whyalla last Friday night.

The Bendigo Spirit edged ahead of Adelaide and into third spot when they stormed over the top of the Canberra Capitals 76-64 on Sunday to complete a good return from their visit to the ACT.

The Spirit trailed by one point at the final change yet out-scored the reigning champions 26-13 in the final term as Kristi Harrower (16 points, eight rebounds and seven assists) and Kelly Wilson (23 points) enjoyed fine games.

Marianne Tolo, with 15 points and 12 rebounds, was best for Canberra, who are in fifth spot.

Bendigo warmed up for their comeback win by trouncing the Australian Institute of Sport 94-45 on Saturday night, when Harrower scored 19 and Wilson 14 and the entire squad got game time.

Townsville maintained their unbeaten record with a 92-64 home win over the Logan Thunder in Saturday night's Queensland derby.

Rachael Flanagan, Aneka Davis and Amy Lewis all scored 18 points for the Fire, who get the chance to narrow the gap between them and the Boomers with a double-header in Canberra next weekend.

The Sydney Uni Flames snapped a two-game losing streak with a 91-50 thrashing of the AIS on Friday night at home, which kept them in touch with the top five.

Perth (6-0) and the AIS (8-0) remain winless.

Adelaide face a vital weekend in Victoria for round seven, playing Bendigo on Friday night and Bulleen Saturday night.
