Melbourne Cup-winning trainer Mark Kavanagh was back in the winners' circle at Flemington on Oaks day, although not as vocal as he was earlier in the week.

Hoarse from Shocking's Cup win and the celebrations that followed, Kavanagh still managed a cheer for Outlandish Lad who finished strongly to win the All Greys (1400m) on Thursday.

"It has been a big week," Kavanagh said.

"I am still numb. I am pinching myself but I can't feel it."

Formerly trained by Kylie Huxtable, Outlandish Lad was transferred to Kavanagh two months ago and the Oaks day race restricted to grey horses was only his third start for the stable.

On the advice of his son Sam, who manages the Adelaide stable, Kavanagh aimed the four-year-old at Flemington after he finished fifth at Morphettville on October 10.

Jockey Michael Rodd said he was confident that Outlandish Lad could win after his last-start second to Emjay Hussey at Sale.

Despite being drawn wide, Rodd had him in a forward position just off the pace throughout and urged him home a length ahead of Translation with Go Forest Go 3-1/4 lengths away third.

"He had a little bit of luck but he is a lot better than these," Rodd said.

"He has got a pretty nice turn of foot and he put paid to them quickly."

Kavanagh was just as confident of success.

"He only joined our stable a short time ago but Sam got him going in Adelaide and recommended this race for him," Kavanagh said.

"We gave him couple of weeks to settle in over here and took him to Sale but this was the race we set him for."

Outlandish Lad has won three of his 12 starts and Rodd was pleased to combine with the stable for another win after being unable to make Shocking's weight in the Melbourne Cup.
