It's a long way from a midweek Doomben maiden to the big time but leading jockey Glen Colless believes beautifully-bred filly Tracy's Choice can make the grade.
A half-sister to dual Group One winner Typhoon Tracy, Tracy's Choice scored an impressive win on debut in the Mimiki Foundation Maiden (1020m) at Doomben on Thursday.
A daughter of super stallion Redoute's Choice, Tracy Choice ($4.20) broke the class record in clocking 58.88 seconds to defeat Flinders City ($13) by a half-length with La Chance Finale ($26) another half-length back third.
Colless acknowledged the opposition wasn't overly strong but said Tracy's Choice gave him the feel of a very good horse.
"She's a big, leggy filly and she's got a long way to go but she has to start somewhere," he said.
"The 1000 metres was way too short for her and she still doesn't know much about it but she'll be a very nice filly when she gets her act together."
Typhoon Tracy returned to winning form with a dominant display in the Group One Myer Classic (1600m) at Flemington last Saturday after the Red Ransom mare failed to extend her brilliance to a middle distance two starts earlier.
But Colless said he had little doubt Tracy's Choice would excel over longer trips once she matures and becomes more experienced.
"I've got a feeling she might be a bit special once she gets over some ground later on," he said.
Tracy's Choice is out of former champion South African mare Tracy's Element and both she and Typhoon Tracy are raced by big-spending Gold Coast owner-breeder John Hutchins.
Colless has ridden numerous winners for Hutchins in the past few seasons and said it was pleasing to see him reaping the rewards for the big investment he has made in racing.
"He's spent plenty of money on nice mares to breed with and he puts them to the best stallions so he deserves every success he gets," Colless said.
