Eagle Farm trainer Barry Baldwin was already eyeing the Group One Lightning Stakes with Burdekin Blues after the brilliant sprinter dominated the Grazia Ultimate Style Guide Stakes at Flemington.
The Sequalo five-year-old, ridden by Shane Scriven, started $5 equal favourite and raced to a clear lead from barrier one in the Listed 1100m event and was never challenged, scoring by 1-3/4 lengths from Let Loushe ($21) with Happy Glen ($8) two lengths away third.
"You might see him back here in February. He's a free-running horse, he has a slight wind problem and we wanted to give him another go down the straight here after we were disappointed with him in the Newmarket," Baldwin said.
Baldwin said the gelding had a back problem after he ran 14th to Scenic Blast in the Newmarket (1200m) at Flemington and fifth to The Jackal in the Star Kingdom Stakes (1100m) at Rosehill, both last March, and had a long layoff.
He's won two of his three starts since returning.
"He's a speed horse. I don't know how far he'll run, maybe 1200 metres is his maximum," Baldwin said.
Burdekin Blue's dam Winsome Blue won 16 races in Queensland from 800m to 1030m but according to Baldwin couldn't run a step further than that.
"He's got that over his head but we don't mind," he said.
"He can get the 1200 metres but he has a little bit of a soft palate which he's had all his life and that doesn't help him run further and if you try to hold him up he does choke down a bit so we just let him free-roll.
"I'm not saying he'll win the Lightning but they'll know he's there."
Scriven, who won the Group One Mackinnon Stakes on Scenic Shot on Saturday, said Burdekin Blues was at his best on Thursday when he took his record to nine wins from 16 starts.
"He was in the zone, he was so relaxed today, it was a very good effort," he said.
"He's a very fast horse who runs quick sectionals and it would have taken a special effort to get past him."
The other $5 equal favourite Keano disappointed, finishing second last of the 13 runners.
